I am a "gasketist". I create visual art and design objects from used and redundant gaskets. A gasket is flat component used between two mechanical surfaces to prevent the passage of a liquid or a gas. This humble and inconspicuous part is hidden away to most, yet its function is essential. Once a gasket has “blown” or fails, it is rendered unusable and therefore can only be used once. Gaskets are made from a variety of materials including paper, card, cork, rubber, graphite, and various metals. I find them intriguing as my eye is drawn around the contours of their internal and external shapes.
