This piece is both a pun and a self-portrait.
I started my career in children’s book publishing as an editor, shaping stories meant to spark imagination, then moved into exhibit development at a science museum, designing experiences that invited people to learn by doing. Now, I get to support innovation in all its forms at the largest free and open-access makerspace and innovation center in the US.
Recently, we hosted an Open Print Exchange exhibition and ran LEGO block-printing workshops as a low-stakes, high-joy entry point for first-time printers. While I haven't printed since high school, I found myself wanting to play, too! Entering this year's Exchange became a small act of returning to making, of carving out space to create for myself again.
While I set out to create a minifig-inspired design, I instead ended up with something a little more meta. ""Block Printing"" is a little love letter to the throughline of my work, where storytelling, making, and play all intersect.
